I had Cox gigablast service installed today, and everything seems to be working fine except that, in the 'available networks' list on my wireless devices, an extra SSID appears that reads 'OutOfService'. I tried naming the 2.4G and the 5G differently, and now both of those display but the 'OutOfService' still displays. Is this a normal thing, or is something misconfigured?
That router supports Cox's free WiFi hotspots which would allow anyone with a Cox username and password to login to your router and use your WiFi. The routers default is "Prefer Private Connection" which prevents any Cox customer from logging into your router, but those signals still appear in the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands.
Don't concern yourself about it. Your fine. My Panoramic router behaves the same way. That had me stymied as well until I learned about Cox hotspots. Once I did and along with wondering what "Prefer Private Connection" did, I finally put two and two together.
Thanks. The installing technician told me it had something to do with software updates, and when I called support later, they tried to convince me that I was seeing a neighbor's router. Your response makes a lot more sense...
