pop up adds for porn?

new issue.

opened web mail this a.m. & from the bottom left corner there was a string of pop up ads..."sponsored links" is what it said.  most were pretty obviously porn.

seeing no way to close it, i reloaded the page and after logging in again, it had gone away.

now it's back.

1) WHY?

2) how do i make it go away for good.

3) is cox really ok with this for family viewing?

  • I replied last night, but it's not here.

swamper, welcome to ***. You will not have a normal day for months.

change your password. Delete your account and set it up again. Tap your left toe 3 times & turn around twice. Delete cache & cookies. Close browser & reopen. It won't help....but it gives the moderators time to research. Now if only cox would give them answers.

keep in mind it isn't them. It's cox.

In my case..apparently it wasn't a virus. Just a legit business that I'm figuring cox has a relationship with that they won't admit who fixed the issue and was very professional about it. Lucky me.

We are in this by ourselves.

  • Hello,

That does not sound good at all. Has your email account migrated to the new webmail format? If so, there should be a minimize button on the side of the bar that separates the sponsored links from the inbox. You may also want to run a virus scanner just in case a virus has hijacked the sponsored links section. Also, what browser are you currently using?

    Thanks,

Allan - Cox Support Forums Moderator.

  • Yea! Your 3rd party is working again gand I got notified!

Yes.this email address got f***d up, er..."migrated," back in July.  While I was out with husband & friends, sipping wine, minding my own business & being a good little customer. There has not been a day since that email was ok. So pardon  any attitude in this response.

Also , PLEASE NOTE..there is a new post in the Internet forum about pop ups that are annoying.  I have posted ther too so that guy won't think he's alone.

This is after I called yesterday & was assured that MY computer had been infected &I it was MY problem.

i did discover that my malware bytes had not been running. It tried to update me but I could not turn on live monitoring. Today, I gave an hour to uninstalling and reinstalling. That coverage.  Did a scan. Found nothing. My daily scans of Microsoft security essentials has found nothing. And still it persists.

wanted to change my password on this email account but couldn't. Called again. Was told there were problems with webmail in my area...MY AREA??? How about everywhere!?

i use chrome browser and I have pop ups turned off. The only site I have this issue with is cox webmail with the rb...address.

Also, pls note, I said this was from the bottom LEFT side of the screen. Not the ribbon ads cox runs on the right.

  • tiffany, that's why i SAID the ads i'm talking about are on the left.  cox's are on the right. the different is obvious.

and i'm way ahead of you on the emptying thing.  i even deleted my history.

tonight i was able to click on the "sponsored links" title & this is who it supposedly is... well ok.  i can't paste a clip here???

    it's a company called "content.ad" and it's located in irvine...an apartment building?  phone # 855.899.9149

does cox have any ties with them? i have written an email & used their contact form.  we'll see if i hear anything.

and yes, i know "for just $2 more a month..."  until it's $5, then $10.  can i add it and delete it?

and allen, there is no minimize or x for these ads.

  • AGAIN, tiffany, i get that this is not a cox approved or pushed annoyance.  stop being defensive & try to help.

and i don't seem to have a virus.  a guy from the company sponsoring these ads actually responded to me.  and, unlike cox, admitted to there being a problem. and they were trying to fix it.

i am happy to say that i've had webmail up all day and...let me find some wood to knock on...no more ads. i've thanked him.

i would still like to know if cox has a relationship with this company? how did this happen? and it can't have been just me.  they were aware of it. maybe there's a vulnerability in this new, improved (?) email system?  i still think it's a 3rd party...not cox...controlled deal.

if cox would just be honest with it's customers & let us decide if we're ok with it...but then where would we go if we weren't?

  • well, they are back. not so happy. have let the company know.

but would still like to know cox's involvement with this.

Well, I got the email (via POP3) about the "New Experience" and can't even log in to webmail. I can log in to pay my bill and post in these forums but I can't get in to webmail.

The email said if you have a problem you should change your password which is the most stupid idea ever. If the password works for bills and forum it should work for webmail. OH, maybe because I don't allow FLASH to run on my computer/browsers.

Don't know if pop ups are a problem.

    Hi @Swamper,

The new Cox Webmail uses HTML5 so you shouldn't have to worry about Flash being blocked. Are you using to site https://myemail.cox.net to login? Are you receiving any error messages when attempting to login?
