My issue is that I am paying $90 a month for a plan they are offering for $71 a month. The website shows a list of upgrades or downgrades that you then "add to cart." Nothing is being offered as a promo. Just upgrades that increase your monthly cost and downgrades that reduce them. In my case it's neither, just the exact same plan for less. I'll ask the neighbors, but regardless, I should be able to get the plan at the lesser rate without having to pony up $100 for the supposed need of a modem swap.
So you weren't on a promotional deal? You can review your year-ago bill in your account. Cox saves up to 18 months.
Do you need 250? If you're a simple user, downgrade to 150.
I went back to past bills and I can see where it says, "the service is part of a 12 Month Service Agreement with Cox." The line item reads: Your Cox Bundle, and then the $69.99 charge. It may have been a move-in type special but I'm not certain. After that though it went up $87.99 per month. Even so, what would that have to do with my current objection?
I do stream a movie here and there on my laptop and I have a motion camera set to record any movement while I'm away and upload to iCloud. The only other downgrade option is to go 100Mbps download and 5Mbps upload. That seems too little. Besides my argument against the $100 modem swap holds more weight if I'm keeping all things equal in the modem department ;)
I'm the same type of user as you. I currently have 250 but the WAN port on my ol' reliable g-router is 100. I don't need 250 so when Cox jacks its price, I'll downgrade to 100.
150 isn't available in your area? Look for Essential Classic at the link. Cox may just be hiding it from you.
Let's take UHD movies as a standard. Most streaming providers recommend 25 Mbps to stream at UHD. To compensate for Network Overhead (network management & re-transmission of packets), 100 Mbps would sufficiently allow 3 simultaneous UHD streams.
You probably wouldn't stream 3 movies at the same time but it gives you an idea of the adequacy of 100 Mbps. If you bundle your services (phone, TV, Internet), you may not find a bundle with 100 Mbps...so watch for this.
Thanks for the info and link. There's quite a few more options there. Unfortunately when I click the "Pricing and Offer" link associated to the Essential Classic plan, it reverts me back to the handful of original add-ons, one being the topic of discussion, which isn't an add-on at all. I'm in Phoenix, AZ so I'm guessing different markets get different options.
I am going to attempt to escalate this and see where it gets me. I'll report back my experience. I appreciate the input! Thank you.
